Schedule Appointment for HARCATUS Free Tax Clinic
The HARCATUS Tri-County Community Action Organization is offering free tax clinics through the Ohio Benefit Bank for households with an income under $50,000. The clinics will be held at area libraries in Carroll, Harrison and Tuscarawas Counties through April.  For help with your state and federal taxes, contact one of the libraries below to schedule an appointment.

Learn about “Truth and Agriculture” from featured speaker Dr. Greg Quackenbusch at the Dairy Producer Meeting on Wednesday, February 15th from 10am to 3pm at Dutch Valley Restaurant. RSVP for Contractor’s Workshop
Soil and Water Conservation Districts in Tuscarawas, Carroll and Stark Counties will welcome contractors and excavators to an educational workshop at the Crossroads Restaurant in Magnolia on Tuesday, February 21st.  Registration and breakfast will begin at 7am with presentations from 8am to noon.  Attendees will order breakfast from the menu and pay individually.  Topics will include abandoned mine land building hazards, dam construction & liability, stream morphology concepts & basic applications, and OUPS safety.  There is no registration fee, but RSVPs are requested by Friday, February 17th by calling 330-339-7976.

Hometown Heroes Nominations
Do you know a resident or employee of Carroll, Harrison or Tuscarawas County who has had an extraordinary impact on the community or has demonstrated the values of courage, character, humanity, or personal initiative within the last two years? Nominate them for the Red Cross Hometown Heroes Campaign. Honorees will be selected by a committee of local individuals including former Hometown Hero recipients. Entries for Hero Writing Contest
Children in kindergarten through 12th grade in Harrison, Carroll or Tuscarawas Counties are encouraged to enter the American Red Cross Hero Writing Contest. Those in K-2 may enter the coloring contest and those in grades 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 may submit essays, shorts stories or poetry, no more than 500 words, typed or handwritten in blue or black ink.

The topics are “A Movie Hero I Admire and Why” for grades 3-5, “What is the Modern Hero?” for grades 6-8, and “A Military Hero I Know, Past or Present” for grades 9-12.

All entries must be signed by a parent, guardian or teacher, confirming the work is original, and should be marked “Hero Writing Contest.” The deadline for entry is Saturday, February 18th. The winning students will be honored at the Hometown Heroes’ Dinner on April 12th at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center and each will receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. Reserve Table for WTCC Fishing Show & Swap Meet

Boy Scout Troop 141 of Carrollton will host its annual Ham Dinner and Silent Auction on Monday, February 20th from 4:30pm to 7pm at Carrollton High School Cafeteria. Hunters Can Donate Venison to Feed the Hungry
Hunters can donate venison through Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH), a ministry that provides nutritious venison to the hungry through food banks and local feeding programs. Processing is paid by FHFH. Indian Valley Foundation Steak Dinner Fundraiser
The Indian Valley Foundation will hold a Steak Dinner Fundraiser on Saturday, February 25th from 4pm to 8pm at the Tuscarawas VFW Post 7943 on Main Street.  The menu will include steak, potato, salad and bread.  Cost is $12.  Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at the Indian Valley Board Office in Gnadenhutten or any of the Indian Valley School buildings, or from any board member.  Proceeds will help support educational opportunities not funded by traditional sources.

Scholarship for Education Majors
The Delta Phi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary organization of women educators, is again offering two $1,000 scholarships to qualified education majors. Norma Johnson Center Essay Contest

Sign Up for Hospice Volunteer Training

HEAP Winter Crisis Program
The HEAP Winter Crisis Program helps eligible households that have either had their heat shut off, received a disconnect notice on their gas and/or electric bills, or heat with fuel oil, propane, coal or wood and have less than a ten-day supply. The program runs through March 31st and assistance may be provided only once per household during the winter heating season. Water Test Kits
Recent developments in oil and gas drilling have increased concerns about water quality. Water test kits with sample bottles and detailed instructions are available from the Tuscarawas County office of the Ohio State University Extension, 419 16th Street SW, New Philadelphia. Farmers Can Nominate School District for Math/Science Grant
To help strengthen local communities and education systems in science and/or math, farmers can nominate a public school district in their rural community to compete for a grant through America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education. Nominated school district administrators can then submit an application for either a $10,000 or $25,000 grant to support a science and/or math educational program by April 30, 2012. School districts that apply for a $10,000 grant will compete against other school districts that are located in the USDA-appointed Crop Reporting District (CRD); except that CRDs with fewer than five eligible school districts will compete against each other for a single grant. A school district that applies for a $25,000 grant will compete against schools that are located in its state or designated region. Grants will be awarded based on merit, need and community support. Johnstown Rebels 4-H Signup
The Johnstown Rebels 4-H Club is accepting new members.  If you’re between the ages of 5 and 18 and live in the Midvale, Roswell, or Barnhill area, please join us for a meeting to discover the wide range of projects available.  We have something for everyone.  Choose from farm animals, pets, ATV'S, theater, sewing, welding, gun safety, exploring Ohio ponds, clowning, robotics, and so much more.  Meetings will be held twice a month through April at the Tuscarawas County Coon Hunters Club on Greenridge Road. Help for Carroll County Smokers Who Want to Quit
Do you smoke cigarettes every day, but want to quit? Dundee Lucky X Shoots

Bolivar Sportsman Club Lucky X Shoots
The Bolivar Sportsman Club holds Lucky X Shoots on the second Sunday of each month. Along with the shoot, the club holds gun show/trade days. Doors open at 6am with breakfast being served. The shoot starts at 9am, and is open to the public. The club also holds Trap Shoots every Friday at 6:30pm at the club grounds which are also open to the public. The Zoar Wetland is only supported by private donations, and we invite you to join. As a member you are eligible to become a Board Member with a direct say in how the wetland operates, and are invited to bring a canoe or kayak to explore areas of the lake not accessible by trail. Your ideas and energy can help keep the wetland growing each year. Membership is $15 for students, $25 for individuals, $50 for a family, and $100 for corporate. Recycle unwanted items and help a worthy cause by donating to the Canton Preservation Society, a non-profit group dedicated to the preservation & restoration of structures and neighborhoods. Countdown2Drive is an education program to help 13-14 year olds and their parents with safe passenger and driving knowledge well before the teens take the wheel. The program includes a parent-teen Passenger Agreement to help establish family rules and guidelines for driving, rewards and consequences.
