Luella M. Newell



Luella M. Newell, age 83, of 34 Second Street,  Sherrodsville, Ohio, died Friday evening, September 13, 2013 in the New Dawn Health Care Center at Dover following a long illness.

She was born September 24, 1929 in Barnesville, Ohio and was the daughter of the late Lewis F. Wood and Elsie L. Bonifant Wood Bake.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father Abraham Bake, a brother Richard Wood, and two sons Dennis R. "Denny " Newell, who died March 21, 1990, and Gregory I. Newell, who died September 3, 2013.

She was an active and faithful member of the Calvary United Methodist Church at Sherrodsville for 64 years. She was a dedicated member of the United Methodist Women of the church. Over the span of her membership, Luella was involved in virtually every social function, funeral dinner, or fundraising event sponsored by the UMW.  Luella was a charter member of the Carroll County Historical Society and a member of the Carroll County Republican Party. Luella, along with her husband Bud were strong supporters of the Conotton Valley Schools and athletic programs and were visible at most of their events for many years.  She also enjoyed professional sports, and was a fan of the Cleveland Indians, the Chicago Bulls, and Chicago Blackhawks.  Luella always supported local events and took active part in homecomings and other fund-raising events for the church, fire department, and other organizations. She had a strong and caring personality and often helped her family and others care for their elderly and sick family members.  Luella enjoyed dining out in the local restaurants with friends and family, and spent many hours at Dave's Diner in Sherrodsville, and the former Chef Ernie's Restaurant that was located on State Route 542.  She was a loving wife, and mother, and cherished the time she could spend with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband  Herman Irvin "Bud" Newell, whom she married May 15, 1949, a  son Kevin  (Angel)  Newell of Laguna Niguel, CA,  daughters-in-law Sadie Newell and Doris A. Newell, both of Sherrodsville, her brother John (Kimber Lee) Wood of Newark, O.,  seven grandchildren Bryan (Kristen) Newell of Powell, O., Mrs. David (Carrie) Harris of Stow, O.,  Chase Newell and his fiancee Ashley  Holder of North Canton, O., Ciera Newell of Sherrodsville, Derek (Hillary) Newell of Massillon, O., Bryden Newell of Laguna Niguel, CA, and Gerilyn Slicker of Las Vegas, Nevada, and four great-grandchildren Lydia and Juliet Harris of Stow, O. and Connor and Matthew Newell of Massillon, Ohio.

Bud Newell and his family gratefully acknowledge the efforts and kindnesses of the Community Hospice Staff, Penny Dillehay and Marti Martinelli in particular, the Staff of the New Dawn Health Care Center, and Pastor Kenneth Ogg.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Thursday, September 19, 2013 in the Calvary United Methodist Church at Sherrodsville with Pastor Kenneth Ogg officiating.  Interment will follow in the Sherrodsville Memorial Gardens. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 P.M. in the Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville.  The family suggests memorial contributions  in Luella's memory may be made to the Calvary United Methodist Church, P.
