Velda Mae Miller, of Massillon, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, January 7, 2014, a day following her 93rd birthday. Born in Navarre on January 6, 1921, a daughter to the late Lemuel and Jennie E. (Baskey) Smith, Velda graduated from the former Navarre High School and had worked as a sales clerk with the former Ideal Department Store and in the payroll department of the former Republic Steel Corp. in Massillon. Actively involved in the faith community of Fohl Memorial United Methodist Church for more than thirty years, she had served as a greeter, usher and assisted with the distribution of communion.
Predeceased by her parents; her husband, Howard L. Miller; sisters, Grace M. Geopfert and Margaret F. Bailey; a niece, Charlene G. Neubauer, and nephews, Garry and Larry R. Bailey; Velda is survived by her nieces, Barbara Bailey, of Navarre and Marlene (John) Miller, of Dundee, and nephews, Gregory F. Bailey (Kathy Richards), also of Dundee and Francis A. (Margaret) Bailey of Beach City. Also surviving are many beautiful great-nieces and –nephews and a host of cherished friends.
Funeral services will be at the noon hour, Friday, January 10, 2014, preceded by one hour of visitation from 11-12:00 p.m., at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon. A dear cousin, Rev. Donald Schilling, will officiate and burial will follow in Union Lawn Cemetery.
