Johnstown Rebels 4-H Signup
The Johnstown Rebels 4-H Club is accepting new members. If you’re between the ages of 5 and 18 and live in the Midvale, Roswell, or Barnhill area, please join us at a meeting on Sunday, February 5th at 2pm at the Tuscarawas County Coon Hunters Club on Greenridge Road. The wide range of projects available offers something for everyone. Choose from farm animals, pets, ATV'S, theater, sewing, welding, gun safety, exploring Ohio ponds, clowning, robotics, and much more. Meetings will be held twice a month with an April 13th deadline for signup. However the sooner you sign up, the more time you will have to complete your project. Nursing Career Exploration Program
High school or college students interested in a nursing career are invited to visit Union Hospital on February 8th, and March 14th for a three hour program. Students should arrive at 9am. The sessions begin with patient privacy, confidentiality, and infection control briefing followed by behind the scenes visits to nursing units including medical, surgical, ICU/Stepdown, maternity, emergency and pediatrics, depending on student interests and patient activity. WTCC Fishing Show & Swap Meet
A Fishing Show and Swap Meet will be held on Saturday, February 18th from 10am to 6pm at the Warren Township Community Center (formerly New Cumberland Elementary School) on the corner of State Route 212 and New Cumberland Road, one mile from Atwood Lake dam. There will be door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. Creamed chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, coneys, sloppy joes, pork & sauerkraut, soups and more will be available. Admission is $3. Those twelve and under will be admitted free. Cost for vendors is $15 per table (for the first two tables and $10 for a third table) with free admission for the vendor and one helper. Hero Writing Contest
Children in kindergarten through 12th grade in Harrison, Carroll or Tuscarawas Counties are encouraged to enter the American Red Cross Hero Writing Contest. Those in K-2 may enter the coloring contest and those in grades 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 may submit essays, shorts stories or poetry, no more than 500 words, typed or handwritten in blue or black ink.
The topics are “A Movie Hero I Admire and Why” for grades 3-5, “What is the Modern Hero?” for grades 6-8, and “A Military Hero I Know, Past or Present” for grades 9-12.
All entries must be signed by a parent, guardian or teacher, confirming the work is original, and should be marked “Hero Writing Contest.” The deadline for entry is Saturday, February 18th. The winning students will be honored at the Hometown Heroes’ Dinner on April 12th at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center and each will receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. Claymont Foundation Scholarships
The Claymont Foundation is accepting applications for academic scholarships for Claymont High School seniors who will attend a technical trade school, community college, or university and from Claymont High School graduates who are full time undergraduate college students attending a technical trade school, community college, or university. Applications from high school seniors are due in the guidance office by Monday, February 27th at 3pm. And applications from undergraduates are due by 5pm on March 5th. Scholarship for Education Majors
The Delta Phi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary organization of women educators, is again offering two $1,000 scholarships to qualified education majors. Applicants must be residents of Tuscarawas or Harrison counties and on schedule to graduate with a degree in education by September 2013. Applications must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2012. Norma Johnson Center Essay Contest
The Norma Johnson Center invites children in grades 3-5 to enter an essay contest. Choose an occurrence or event in the life of an animal that lives in the wild and is native to Ohio, and describe that event from the animal’s point of view in 150 words or less. All entries must include entrant’s name, school, school contact number, grade, teacher’s name, shirt size and a home contact number, and be postmarked or received by March 2nd. First, second and third place winners will be announced on March 13th and contacted by phone. Winners will be asked to read their essays during the Norma Johnson Center’s Silent Auction and Recognition Program on March 29th at the St. John’s Church of Christ in Dover. Prizes will be awarded to the first three places. First place $30 cash, second place $20 cash, and third place $10 cash prize. All winners will receive a NJC 2012 Family Membership and Norma Johnson Center t-shirt. NP Kiwanis Scholarships
Applications are being accepted through Thursday, March 15th for New Philadelphia Kiwanis Club Scholarships of $500. Students must live within the New Philadelphia School District and be entering their freshman through senior year of college in 2012-2013. Awards are based on academic achievement, school activities, community service, and financial need with additional consideration going to those who participated in Kiwanis Circle K or Key Clubs and to those attending Kent State Tuscarawas. Forms are available at New Philadelphia and Central Catholic High Schools, Buckeye Career Center and Kent State Tuscarawas. Countdown2Drive is an education program to help 13-14 year olds and their parents with safe passenger and driving knowledge well before the teens take the wheel. The program includes a parent-teen Passenger Agreement to help establish family rules and guidelines for driving, rewards and consequences. Monthly Story Hour at Bowerston Library
Children ages 3-5 are invited to Story Hour at the Bowerston Library, 200 Main Street, on the first Wednesday of every month at 10:30am. For more information, call 740-269-8531.
Story Time at TWC
Story Time will be held at the Wilderness Center on the third Wednesday of every month at 11am. The program will include stories, songs and an outside walk. The stories are focused on 3-4 year olds, however younger and older children are welcome. Registration is available, but not required.
