Increasing January Rainfall Affects Rivers and Streams

An unseasonably warm winter has created unexpected conditions for the Muskingum and Tuscarawas Rivers.

A flood warning was issued for the Tuscarawas River through Friday after waters neared flood stage while Coshocton County will remain under a flood warning until Monday for the Muskingum River.

Nick Krupa, operations manager for the Muskingum area of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, says next week’s mild weather forecast should allow enough time for waters to recede.

Krupa says the warmer weather has helped control run-off water in the nearby rivers and streams.

According to Krupa, residents should be thankful this year’s precipitation has come in the form of rain instead of snow.

This week’s rainfall has flooded Somerdale Road (CR 109) in Fairfield and Sandy Townships in Tuscarawas County.  The roadway will be closed until the water recedes.

Fortunately, the record setting rainfall in 2011 and elevated levels in 2012 have not affected construction at the Dover Dam.  Krupa says contractors have finished several anchors and are preparing to begin phase II of the construction process in the spring.
