Donald Ralph Smith



Donald Ralph Smith, 91, of Uhrichsville, passed away at his home on August 3, 2013 following a lengthy illness. Born July 24, 1922 in Dennison, he was a son of the late James Ralph “J.R.” and Loretta Marie (Clark) Smith.

Donald served his country in the United States Army’s 681 Quartermasters during World War II. In 1988, he retired from Dover Chemical Plant, the former Union Camp Corporation, after twenty-eight years of employment. He enjoyed fishing and riding his bike, and was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church in Uhrichsville.

On August 30, 1947, Donald married the former Betty Marie Alwood with whom he enjoyed nearly sixty-four years of marriage until her passing on August 2, 2011. They are survived by two daughters, Peggy Bernard of the home and Cathy (Michael) Clymer of Uhrichsville; three grandchildren, Carrie Dobbs of South Carolina, Jeffery (companion, Ginger) Bernard of Steubenville and Christian (Kelly) Clymer of Dundee; eight great-grandchildren, Kayla and Jimbo McDowell, Harmony, Corbin and Ryan Clymer, and Ryan, Jacob and Kelsey Bernard; and a great-great-granddaughter, Zoe Anthony. Donald is also survived by a sister, Kate Warner of Canton, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jo Ann and Tom Williams and Dorothy and Ray Barnabi; a brother, Kenneth “Shorty” Smith; and a brother-in-law, Paul Warner.

Services for Donald, officiated by Rev. Larry Malterer and Rev. Harry Milligan, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 7, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow beside his beloved wife in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, prior to the funeral service. Those wishing to honor Donald’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Grace United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society and the American Diabetes Association.
