Clayton James Carpenter, Sr.

Clayton James Carpenter, Sr., 85, of New Philadelphia, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Riverside Manor in Newcomerstown after a lengthy illness. Born March 13, 1928 in Calais, Ohio, he was a son of the late Otto and Harriett (Leach) Carpenter.
A retired railroader who had been employed by Conrail, Clayton spent much of his life living in the Newcomerstown and Port Washington area. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army at the close of World War II. In his spare time, Clayton enjoyed fishing and gardening.
On February 25, 1960, Clayton married the former Betty Jean Hart with whom he enjoyed fifty years of marriage until her passing on March 5, 2010. They are survived by four children, Clayton J. “Joe” (companion, Georgia) Carpenter of  Port Washington, Cathy (companion, Jake Sugget) Carpenter of Newcomerstown,  Mark (companion, Jessica) Carpenter of Newcomerstown, and Beth (Paul) Felgenhauer with whom he had resided in New Philadelphia; grandchildren, Nile, Lance, Desmond, Tanesha, Brandy, Kierston and Lucas; and great-grandchildren, Darrin and Betty Jean. Clayton is also survived by five siblings, Linda Carpenter, Wilma Briggs, Denny Carpenter, Tom Carpenter and Irene Henry; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Miller, and three brothers, Jake, Leonard and William Carpenter.
Services for Clayton, officiated by Rev. Mark Unrue, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow beside his beloved wife in Port Washington’s Salem Union Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
