A resident of Navarre and a member of St. Clement – now Holy Family Parish Church until relocating to his daughter’s home in Avon in 2010, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather with a life of service to the nation and to the local community.
Honorably discharged after service in the US Army during WWII, Harold retired as a warehouse foreman with the former East Ohio Gas Co. He and his late wife Betty were partners in Betty’s Beauty Salons and Wooster Beauty School. He served as a Navarre Village councilman from 1978-84 and as mayor of Navarre in 1984-85. He served on the board of directors of the former Navarre Deposit Bank and as a member of the Sky Bank Stark County Advisory Board. Harold was a past president and past lieutenant-governor of Kiwanis International Ohio District 17 and held active memberships with the Disabled American Veterans Massillon Chapter 38, Navarre VFW Post 5047 and Navarre Moose Lodge 2471.
Preceded in death by his wife, Betty F. (Hennis) Axe; his parents; a sister, Gloria J. (Axe) Davis, and a brother, Gordon G. Axe.
Harold is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth A. (Thomas) Burke, of Avon; son, Jeffry F. (Dr. Leslee Ruszkowski)-Axe, of Canton; and grandchildren, Natalie Burke and Dylan and Sienna Axe.
Funeral services will be Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m., at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Navarre where the family will receive guests one hour prior to the service, from 10-11:00 a.m. Fr. Michael D. Seifert of Holy Family Parish will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in East Union Lawn Cemetery.
