Northeast Ohio runner-up wants sheriff's job

The runner-up for a partisan appointment as a county sheriff in northeast Ohio is seeking the job vacated when the winner was disqualified by the Ohio Supreme Court.

Interim Stark County Sheriff Timothy Swanson and Lt. Louis Darrow asked the court on Monday to compel Democratic Party leaders to appoint Darrow as sheriff in Canton.

With the sheriff's job vacant because the elected Democrat was sick, party leaders selected George Maier in February. Darrow finished second in the committee voting.

The court removed Maier from office Nov. 6 because he lacked the recent law-enforcement experience required by law to be sheriff.

County Democratic chairman Randy Gonzalez told The (Canton) Repository the party has hired five attorneys to sort out the issue. Party leaders will meet Dec. 11 on the appointment.
