Many organizations around the area are hit harder during the holidays, and WTUZ is working with our communities to collect items for donations.
The WTUZ Week of Sharing kicks off at the radio station at 2424 East High Avenue in New Philadelphia on Monday morning at 9am. Donations will be accepted all day until 5pm.
Organizations receiving the donations include the Twin City Christian Service Center. They provide a food pantry, emergency services, and referrals. Director Lois Muster says the center has seen an increase in those looking for help.
Also benefitting from the Week of Sharing will be the Friends of the Homeless Shelter. The facility is currently at capacity with 36 individuals, including children ranging in ages from a year and a half to 16. House Manager Phyllis Boice says basic necessity items for everyday living are some of their greatest needs. She says donations are critical to continue serving the homeless.
There are many different reasons people seek help with the homeless shelter, but Boice says the majority are there because of economic changes.
Boice says many give during the holiday season, but organizations work to help people all year long.
