Survey: Dangerous Toys Still Found on Store Shelves

In the holiday rush, remember that it still pays to be cautious when shopping for toys.

A report released this week by Ohio PIRG describes several toys that pose health or safety hazards to children, ranging from toxins to choking.  Spokesman Bryan Stewart says many toys still contain lead, including the Marvel Superhero Squad Soft Shield. He says there are other items that aren't toys, but still can be dangerous to children.

Stewart says there is no comprehensive list of potentially hazardous toys, so shoppers must be vigilant.

Over the past five years, he says, stronger rules have helped get some of the most dangerous toys and children’s products off the market. However, Stewart says not all toys comply with the law, and holes in the toy safety net remain.

Stewart believes standards for toxic chemicals like lead and cadmium remain too weak, and says enforcement needs to be stepped up. More information is online at ToySafetyTips.org.
