Bertha Mae Phipps, age 96, of Fisher Road, Freeport, died peacefully at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, December 08, 2013 surrounded by family at her daughter’s home in Sugarcreek, Ohio where she had resided the last several years.
Born September 1, 1917 in Tippecanoe, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Harry Sumner Carruthers and Lucy Jane Willison Carruthers.
Bertha became a member of the Freeport United Methodist Church in 1942. Bertha moved to Sugarcreek from Fisher Road, Freeport in 2000.
Her husband, Frank K. (Bill) Phipps died June 28, 1989. They were married November 14, 1935.
Surviving are a son and a daughter: Jerry (Joanna) Phipps of Bridgeport and Judy (Bob) Werker of Sugarcreek; a sister, Arlene Owens of Orlando, Florida; ten grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Betty; three brothers: Raymond Carruthers, John Carruthers, James Carruthers and Robert Carruthers; and four sisters: Laura Gier, Alice Moran, Dorothy Maurer, and Mary Anderson.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, December 12, 2013 in Koch Funeral Home, Freeport with Pastor Dave Koch officiating. Burial will follow in Greenmont Union Cemetery, Freeport. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service in the funeral home.
